Lutheran World Federation meets in Soviet bloc
The first international assembly of the Lutheran World Federation in a communist country was faced with controversial issues Sunday, including possible expulsion of two whites-only churches from South Africa and Southwest Africa.
An internationally televised religious service from Budapest's sports stadium was planned to open the assembly. 320 delegates are to gather for two weeks to represent the interests of 55 million members of their 97 churches.
Some issues the delegates are expected to review are East-West relations, the churches in exile, the problem of Hungarians abroad, the fate of Soviet Nobel laureate Andrei Sakharov and that of Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg.
