India moves to protect moderate Sikh leader

Authorities tightened security in the Golden Temple to protect a moderate Sikh leader from assassins, the Hindustan Times said Thursday, and a Sikh terrorist in military custody reportedly turned government witness.

Santa Singh is leader of the Nihang faction of Sikhs that cooperated with the government in repairing the shrine last week, which was severely damaged in last month's Army raid against Sikh extremists.

Harminder Singh Sandhu, a top lieutenant of slain Sikh militant leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and general secretary of the outlawed All India Sikh Students Federation, will be a ''star witness'' against Sikh terrorists in future court trials.
