George Gallup, American political pollster

George Gallup, whose Gallup Polls tracked the opinions of the world for a half century and helped reshape American politics, passed on Friday at his summer home in Switzerland.

Mr. Gallup once said he learned three significant things about America during his lifetime: ''The judgment of the American people is extraordinarily sound. The public is almost always ahead of its leaders.''
