Karami calls emergency meeting amid new violence
An emergency meeting of Prime Minister Rashid Karami's unity Cabinet is scheduled for today to iron out differences over how to extend a security plan into the Shouf mountains overlooking Beirut.
There have been a series of violent incidents recently in north, central and south Lebanon involving the Lebanese army, the Israelis, and various militias.
A Syrian-backed security plan was put into effect in Beirut July 4. It was designed to reunite the divided city and bring Lebanon closer to ending nine years of civil war.
