Main Nicaraguan opposition fails to register candidates

The main opposition group in leftist-led Nicaragua failed to register candidates for the general election in November, apparently deciding not to take part, official sources said Monday. The Democratic Coordinator, a grouping of four conservative parties, had not registered when authorities announced the deadline passed at midnight after a 24-hour extension. Unregistered parties would be forbidden to carry out political activity during the campaign, which got under way officiall Aug. 1.
