Moscow out to beat L.A. with its own games
The East bloc's alternative to the Los Angeles summer games, starting here tomorrow, carefully avoids any direct use of the word ''Olympics,'' which would violate the Olympic Charter. The Friendship '84 games were hastily scheduled after the Soviet-led Olympic boycott was announced in May so as to ease the disappointment of athletes and sports fans here.
The games are being held in many communist countries over the summer. About 8 ,000 athletes from 40 countries are expected to attend, some of them from Austria, Greece, Denmark, Italy, Canada, Finland, France, and Switzerland.
The events will be held in many of the same venues as the 1980 Moscow Olympics, some of which have received a needed face lift. The USSR is also issuing a series of five postage stamps to mark the competitions.
