Solidarity Leadership appeals for support on anniversary
Solidarity's underground leadership is urging Poles to demonstrate their support for the now-outlawed union in a ''Solidarity holiday'' on the fourth anniversary of its birth at the end of this month.
The anniversary marks the signing of the Gdansk accords on Aug. 31, 1980, between the government and striking workers that legitimized Solidarity as the first free trade union in the Soviet bloc. Solidarity was suppressed and later outlawed after the declaration of martial Law on Dec. 13, 1981.
