Opposition in Chile is urging boycotts to foster democracy

Opponents of the military government of President Augusto Pinochet urged Chileans to boycott stores and schools Tuesday to back demands for a return to democracy. The two-day protest, was called by the Democratic Alliance, a coalition of centrist parties seeking an end to Pinochet's reign.

Monday, the Chilean appeals court ordered the suspension for five weeks of the weekly magazine Cauce and the seizure of the latest edition of the fortnightly magazine Analisis, following a complaint by the Interior Ministry that the publications had subverted law and order, insulted President Pinochet, and instigated strikes and protests.
