Previous attacks by 'Islamic Jihad' terrorists
A group calling itself the Islamic Jihad has claimed responsibility for a number of terrorist acts. The Jihad is presumed to be pro-Iranian and to draw support from Shiite Muslims. Prior attacks for which it has claimed responsibility include:
APRIL 18, 1983 - Truck bombing of the US Embassy in Beirut, killing 63 people , including 17 Americans.
OCT. 23, 1983 - 241 US servicemen, 58 French troops killed in suicide bomb attacks in Beirut.
DEC. 12, 1983 - At least six bombs explode in Kuwait. Four people killed in a blast at US Embassy.
DEC. 21, 1983 - Explosion at French military command post in east Beirut. 17 Lebanese and 1 French soldier killed.
JAN. 18, 1984 - American University of Beirut president Malcolm H. Kerr shot to death near his office.
FEB. 8, 1984 - Tehran martial law administrator under the late Shah of Iran, Gen. Gholam Ali Oveissi, and his brother Gholam Hosein Oveissi shot dead in Paris.
AUG. 7, 1984 - Iranian Radio says Islamic Jihad planted mines in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Suez.
