Salvadorean court weighing letup in guardsmen sentences
Five former national guardsmen convicted of murdering four American churchwomen have asked for a reduction of their 30-year sentences, and a judge is considering their appeal, a court official says.
In another development, President Jose Napoleon Duarte said he is not convinced of Nicaragua's good faith in negotiating the Contadora peace treaty for Central America. On Monday, Mr. Duarte said he would expel 55 US military advisers from El Salvador if Nicaragua would simultaneously oust its Cuban advisers.
