Italian police arrest 147 in another anti-crime sweep

Police said 147 people were arrested early Monday in a major anti-crime sweep in five Italian cities. Officers were still looking for 159 other suspects who managed to escape the dragnet in the northern cities of Milan, Pavia, Como, and Mantova and in the southern city of Taranto.

The arrests followed a nationwide anti-Mafia crackdown that resulted in at least 62 arrests nine days ago.

It was not clear whether Monday's arrests were Mafia-related or focused on other criminals.
