Japanese leader Nakasone to keep seat another term
After eight hours of deliberation, Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party announced Saturday night that Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone would be returned unopposed for another two-year term as party leader.
This means Mr. Nakasone will not have to face formal reelection as party leader next month and can remain prime minister until 1986.
Nakasone's three rivals, Foreign Minister Shintaro Abe, former Foreign Minister Kiichi Miyazawa and Toshio Komoto, director general of the Economic Planning Agency, backed out of the contest after a weekend of political infighting.
