Rep. Hawkins raps Reagan on veto of youth-jobs bill
President Reagan's veto of a bill that would have created an American Conservation Corps demonstrates he is out of touch with the problem of youth unemployment, the chairman of the House Committee on Education and Labor said Thursday.
Under the legislation, some 37,000 jobs would have been provided for young people on public lands, improving and conserving parks and forests. It called for an appropriation of $100 million over three years.
The chairman, Rep. Augustus F. Hawkins (D) of California, said Mr. Reagan has already cut federal spending for youth programs by 48 percent during his administration.
