Winds delay shuttle launch; senator tapped for later run
Strong high-altitude crosswinds that could tear a spaceship apart postponed Wednesday's launching of the space shuttle Discovery. Liftoff was rescheduled for 7:17 a.m., Eastern time, today. On this mission, Discovery's 14th, free-flying astronauts will try to retrieve two off-course satellites.
Meanwhile, US Sen. Jake Garn (R) of Utah has been chosen by NASA to fly on a forthcoming space shuttle mission. Senator Garn is chairman of a Senate subcommittee that handles funding for NASA. He is a former Navy pilot and a retired lieutenant colonel in the US Air National Guard. The agency has not yet determined when Mr. Garn will fly
