Democrats gain in Senate, Republicans gain in House; PACIFIC STATES

Washington Gov. John Spellman, a Republican, was unseated by Booth Gardner, a Democrat and the Weyerhaeuser lumber company heir. Republican Sens. Ted Stevens of Alaska and Mark O. Hatfield of Oregon were easily returned to office, with Senator Hatfield's reputation holding strong among voters following an federal investigation of the senator for alleged influence peddling. Despite several tight races, the political makeup of the congressional delegation in the Northwest remained at nine Republicans and eight Democrats. Democrat Les AuCoin kept his Oregon congressional seat in one of the most expensive campaigns in the country this election. In a tight race between two environmentalists for the Washington congressional seat vacated by Republican Joel Pritchard, Republican John Miller beat Democrat Brock Evans.

Oregon's bellwether county, Crook County, maintained its century-old record of voting correctly for President. The county gave President Reagan more than 60 percent of its 6,500 votes.

Only one incumbent was beaten Tuesday among California's 45 congressmen. Five-term Rep. Jerry Patterson, the lone Democrat among five congressmen from Orange County, was beaten by ultraconservative Robert Dornan, who moved to Orange County from West Los Angeles early this year to battle for this vulnerable seat. Mr. Dornan, a former TV talk-show host, represented a West Los Angeles district in Congress until 1982. In the only other close House battle in California, liberal Rep. George Brown (D) fended off the third challenge in a row from conservative Republican John Paul Stark.

In Hawaii incumbent Democrats Reps. Cecil Heftel and Daniel K. Akaka won reelection.
