Florida senator plans to seek Democratic reins Byrd holds

Sen. Lawton Chiles of Florida has decided to challenge longtime Senate Democratic leader Robert C. Byrd next week when Democrats hold their caucus to prepare for the new Congress, sources said Thursday. These sources, who spoke only on condition of anonymity, said the Florida senator would announce his intention later in the day at a news conference.
