Japanese leftists demonstrate against US nuclear ship

Several thousand leftists held demonstrations Sunday against the scheduled arrival here today of the US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Carl Vinson, alleging that it is armed with nuclear weapons.

Police said a total of over 8,000 people took part in the orderly demonstrations, organized by the major opposition Japan Socialist Party and the Japan Communist Party in this port city south of Tokyo.

The 81,600-ton aircraft carrier, the largest in the world, will visit the US naval base at Yokosuka to provide its crew with rest and recreation.
