Soviet weight lifters compete in Canada despite drug cloud

Two Soviet weight lifters took part in an international competition here Monday night despite being convicted in a Quebec court last week of illegal possession of anabolic steroids. Canadian Sports Minister Otto Jelinek said a loophole in the International Weightlifting Federation's regulations and the time needed for extradition proceedings combined to allow Anatoly Pissarenko and Alexander Kourlovitc to compete.

The two were fined $700 (US) last week after being found guilty of illegally possessing, for the purpose of selling, a quantity of methandrostenoline, or dianobol.
