US picks possible sites for nuclear waste disposal

The Energy Department picked three priority sites Wednesday as possible locations for the disposal of highly radioactive nuclear wastes. They are Deaf Smith County in west Texas; the Hanford nuclear reservation in Washington State; and Yucca Mountain in Nevada. The next two alternative sites are Davis Canyon in Utah and Richton Dome in Mississippi.

The top three sites will be subjected to four years of extensive drilling and geological and hydrological studies. A final site will not be chosen until 1990.
