Chinese writers told to hold party line
Chinese writers must be free to say what they like but should not overstep the boundaries laid down by the party, said Central Committee member Hu Qili at the opening session of the Chinese Writers' Association on Saturday.
Meanwhile, on Friday leading Chinese theoretician Yu Guangyuan emphatically defended his nation's bold disclaimer of orthodox Marxism on grounds that Karl Marx's doctrine is ''far from enough'' to solve China's economic problems. ''The major problem that classical Marxism sought to solve was the problem of socialist revolution, but the major problem we wish to solve is the problem of socialist construction,'' he said.
