Andreotti says Polish sanctions were a mistake

Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Andreotti, recently back from a visit to Poland, was quoted Saturday as saying sanctions adopted in 1981 against Poland's military government were ''a complete mistake by the West, whatever the internal political situation of the country.''

He drew a parallel between Poland's post-1981 isolation and Italy's isolation after its 1935 invasion of Ethiopia which fueled Fascist propaganda and drove it closer to Nazi Germany.
