camera
in old photographs the faces of the men dressed in dark, sturdy suits are grim. hats do not entirely shadow the white eyes. long beards conceal mouths that might be mobile, speaking. the women in white aprons, the sober children -- for the camera they did not smile. the photographs I take might someday be a stranger's view into the rooms we live in now. for the camera we smile. and keep our secrets.
