Sen. Abnor, Rep. Rodino turn back challenges
Highlights of other party primaries staged Tuesday: South Dakota. US Sen. James Abdnor was renominated by Republican voters despite a challenge from GOP Gov. William Janklow. Senator Abdnor faces Democratic Rep. Tom Daschle in the general election.
New Jersey. Veteran Democratic Congressman Peter Rodino turned back a challenge by Newark City Councilman Donald Payne, a black, for renomination.
Alabama. Republican US Sen. Jeremiah Denton was renominated. Rep. Richard Shelby won the Democratic Senate nomination. Lt. Gov. Bill Baxley and Attorney General Charles Graddick were forced into a June 24 runoff to determine the Democratic nominee to succeed retiring Gov. George Wallace.
Iowa. Former state Sen. Lowell Junkins won the Democratic nomination to challenge GOP Gov. Terry Branstad, seeking reelection. Des Moines lawyer John Roehrick is the Democratic nominee to run against Sen. Charles Grassley (R). Actor Fred Grandy of TV's ``The Love Boat'' was nominated for Congress by the GOP.
New Mexico. Ray Powell won the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. The GOP nominee is Garrey E. Carruthers, a former assistant secretary of interior in the Reagan administration.
North Carolina. In a runoff, former Shelby Mayor Lester D. Roark defeated former Belmont Mayor Jack L. Rhyne for the Democratic nomination for 10th District House seat.
