Denmark lodges protest against embassy bugging

Denmark has lodged a diplomatic protest against Poland following the discovery of bugging devices in its Warsaw embassy, the Danish foreign minister said yesterday. Uffe Ellmann-Jensen said a number of highly sensitive microphones connected to a monitoring system were found in the ceiling of the embassy building during a routine inspection. Mr. Ellemann said he sent a ``sharp official protest'' to Polish authorities about what he called a violation of the Vienna convention for diplomatic relations.

Ellemann said the incident comes as Denmark and other Western nations are trying to normalize relations with Poland.

``The matter inevitably strains the confidence which is the most important prerequisite for improved East-West relations. The attitude of the Danish government, however, is to continue its efforts to establish a closer dialogue with Poland,'' he said.
