Evening at Pops (PBS, 8-9 p.m.): Tommy Tune, the Manhattan Rhythm Kings, and the American Ballroom Theater feature choreographer Tune in tribute to Fred Astaire, among other things. Saxophone Colossus (PBS, 9-10:30 p.m.): ``Summer Night Music'' pays homage to Sonny Collins, sometimes called the greatest improviser in the history of jazz.
SUNDAY Whales (PBS, 8-9 p.m.): This ``National Audubon Society Special,'' narrated by Johnny Carson, surveys the history of whaling. Out of Time (NBC, 9-11 p.m.): A maverick 21st-century policeman teams up with his legendary crime-solving great-grandfather in a time-traveling cop show. Gaylord Nelson: A Profile (PBS, 10-10:30 p.m.): Documentary on Wisconsin's preservationist former governor and longtime senator.
MONDAY Adventure (PBS, 8-9 p.m.): The irreverent Tom Vernon cycles through Scandinavia in ``Fat Man on a Bicycle Goes Norse....'' Duke Ellington: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow (PBS, 9-10 p.m.): ``American Masters'' starts a two-part study of Ellington's life and works. Excerpts From Alter Image (PBS, 10-10:30 p.m.): ``Alive From Off Center'' presents offerings from new performers on the British avant-garde scene.
TUESDAY Cowboys Don't Cry (Disney/pay cable, 9-11 p.m.): Poignant drama about itinerant rodeo rider and his son yearning for roots. Knocking on Armageddon's Door/ Living With AIDS (PBS, 10-11 p.m.): Independent filmmakers Torv Carlsen and John Magnus of ``P.O.V.''(Point of View) look at two kinds of survivalists.
WEDNESDAY 16 Days of Glory (PBS, 8-9 p.m.): Premi`ere of six-part series of dramatic tales of the 1984 Summer Olympics. The Big Knife (PBS, 9-11 p.m.): ``American Playhouse'' production of Clifford Odets's drama about an actor in a personal moral crisis.
THURSDAY Ballerina: Great Roles (A&E/cable, 9-10 p.m., ET): Final segment of prima ballerina Natalia Makarova's anaysis of the world of the female dancer looks at legendary roles.
