CORRUPTION A LA STROESSNER

The fortune of Paraguay's exiled ex-President, Gen. Alfredo Stroessner, is believed to run to millions of dollars - and much of it, critics charge, has come from embezzling public funds. Lawyers in Asunci'on say they have documents showing that from August 1986 to February 1989 the Central Bank paid General Stroessner $140,000 every month, with funds meant for government security and intelligence services.

A former minister has said Stroessner benefited to the tune of $4 million from a secret bank account which, from June 1984, received regular payments from state tolls and a special surtax on gasoline.

According to lawyer Abilio Rolon, Stroessner left little evidence of his fortune because of his practice of naming proxies as owners of his assets.
