PHILIPPINE ARMY RECAPTURES HOTEL

Government forces yesterday recaptured a hotel seized by a rebel governor and hundreds of armed supporters in the northern Philippines, but an Army general held hostage was killed, a military spokeswoman said. Spokeswoman Lourdes Ilustre said Brig. Gen. Oscar Florendo was apparently killed by followers of suspended Cagayan province governor Rodolfo Aguinaldo, who took over the six-story hotel in the town of Tuguegarao in a challenge to President Corazon Aquino.

Mr. Aguinaldo and his armed supporters seized the hotel at dawn yesterday after a Manila court ordered his arrest for rebellion and murder in connection with alleged involvement in an Army coup attempt last December.
