US PRODUCTIVITY DROPS SHARPLY

The productivity of American businesses outside the farming sector fell an unexpectedly sharp 1.0 percent in the first quarter of 1990 from the previous quarter, despite goodgains in the manufacturing sector, the Labor Department said Monday. The decline compared with a revised 0.5 percent advance in productivity for the 1989 fourth quarter.
