1955 Egypt accepts Soviet military assistance. 1958-71 Soviets aid in building Aswan High Dam. June 1972 President Anwar Sadat expels 17,000 Soviet military advisers in reaction to a delay in weapons deliveries. September 1981 Sadat expels Soviet ambassador and diplomats on spying charges. October 1981 Sadat is assassinated by Muslim militants. July 1984 Soviet Union and Egypt restore relations to ambassadorial level. April 1987 Moscow reschedules $3 billion in military debt.
