1940 Six-year-old Madeleine May emigrates to the United States with her widowed mother and older brother. 1956 Graduates from University of Massachusetts, Amherst. After earning a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University, she joins the Burlington (Vt.) Free Press.

1959 Marries Arthur Kunin.

1961 Leaves job at a local TV station to have first of four children.

1970 On a family sabbatical in Switzerland, Mrs. Kunin is inspired to enter politics.

1972 Narrowly loses race for alderman; wins seat in State Legislature.

1978 Elected lieutenant governor; reelected in 1980.

1982 Defeated in first try for governorship.

1984 Elected governor of Vermont by 60 votes above the 50 percent required majority.

1990 Announces she will not seek a fourth term.
