The Monitor and NIE Week: Please `Cut It Out!'

This week, March 4-8, is Newspapers in Education Week. The purpose of NIE week (cosponsored by the American Newspaper Publishers Association Foundation and the International Reading Association) is to encourage the use of newspapers in the classroom and as a means of improving students' reading skills. Beginning today, and throughout this week, we'll be highlighting Monitor stories of special interest to young readers, either as a basis for classroom study and discussion, or for individual enjoyment. Each story carries a logo inviting students and teachers to ``Cut It Out.''

For today, we recommend:

Palestinians in Kuwait are lying low. Page 1

Why shortwave radios are in short supply. Page 9

An ancient Chinese manual on `The Art of War' is hot reading today. Page 13

Can America bring a ``new world order'' to the Gulf? Page 18

Why is Christian Science in our name?

Our name is about honesty. The Monitor is owned by The Christian Science Church, and we’ve always been transparent about that.

The Church publishes the Monitor because it sees good journalism as vital to progress in the world. Since 1908, we’ve aimed “to injure no man, but to bless all mankind,” as our founder, Mary Baker Eddy, put it.

Here, you’ll find award-winning journalism not driven by commercial influences – a news organization that takes seriously its mission to uplift the world by seeking solutions and finding reasons for credible hope.
