VIOLENCE CONTINUES IN ALGERIAN CAPITAL
| ALGIERS
Heavy shooting erupted yesterday in curfew-bound Algiers where Islamic militants are defying Army patrols enforcing a state of emergency. The disturbances were in the Belcourt district, a stronghold of the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS). On Saturday, the FIS was rocked by a fresh split when a senior official attacked the leadership of Abassi Madani. FIS official, Sheikh Mohammad Iman, accused Mr. Madani on television of creating a "personality cult" and ignoring his top advisers.Iman said he had opposed last month's strike called by Madani because he knew it would bring out the Army.
