ALMOST HALF OF US FIRMS CUT WORK FORCE

* Since 1990, 47 percent of over 1,800 firms surveyed nationwide took steps, ranging from hiring freezes to layoffs, to reduce their work forces, according to a survey by Towers Perrin, a consulting firm. One in five firms predicts work force reductions in 1992.
