CHURCH ANNOUNCES BUDGET PACKAGE

The Christian Science Board of Directors yesterday announced a 10-percent staff reduction at the headquarters here of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and the Christian Science Publishing Society. The announcement said about 100 employees will be laid off, in addition to the 400 employees laid off when the Publishing Society's cable television service, the Monitor Channel, was effectively shut down in April.

Church spokesman Victor Westberg said that except for television, all the church's activities would continue. These include The Christian Science Monitor, World Monitor magazine, and the domestic and shortwave services of Monitor Radio. In a memo to newspaper employees, editor Richard Cattani said the newspaper would be fully funded, with no budget cuts.

The staff reductions are part of the church's plan for a balanced budget of $70 million for fiscal 1992-93, the announcement said. It said that employees affected by the latest layoffs would get the same severance package offered to television employees in April.
