ISRAEL AND VATICAN MOVE TOWARD TIES

The Vatican and Israel have set up a high-level, permanent commission aimed at normalizing relations, the Vatican said yesterday.

Chief Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls said it would be premature to predict how long before diplomatic links could be established.

The Vatican recognizes Israel's right to exist within secure borders but has denied Israel full diplomatic recognition.
