GERMANS RALLY AGAINST EXTREMISM

German Chancellor Helmut Kohl joined more than 350,000 people in a rally against right-wing violence Sunday, as Germans sought to bolster the nation's democratic image on the eve of the notorious Nazi Holocaust anniversary of Kristallnacht.
The rally in Berlin, which united government and opposition leaders in a street march for the first time, was marred by leftist militants who hurled eggs, paint bombs, and stones at dignitaries.
Most demonstrators were peaceful, but some radicals bellowed "hypocrites, hypocrites" at Chancellor Kohl and his associates, attacking their hesitant response to anti-foreigner rioting and plans to curb foreign immigration.
In speeches, political leaders drew parallels between the atmosphere surrounding anti-foreigner violence and the days of the Weimar Republic, when economic crises contributed to Nazism's rise.
