Shoplifting increased 18 percent between 1987 and 1991, according to the FBI Crime Index.

It continues to be one of the fastest growing crimes in the FBI's larceny-theft category. Hardest hit, as a percentage of their sales, are apparel specialty stores, drug stores, convenience stores, and department stores, the National Retail Federation reports.
