WORTH NOTING ON TV
WEDNESDAY
The Best of Disney Music
(CBS, 8-9 p.m.): Disney movie music is not what it used to be, is it? Before you demur, think of "I've Got No Strings To Hold Me Down, ``An Actor's Life for Me, ``Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah, and on and on - all golden oldies. Yet the premise of this two-part program is that memorable songs are found throughout the history of animated Disney films - including recent ones like ``The Little Mermaid and ``Beauty and the Beast. See if you agree, as Angela Lansbury, who was the voice of Mrs. Potts in the latter film, sings its award-winning title song and acts as host for the show. She leads viewers through the production process, showing how the music not only comes long before the cartoons are drawn, but often acts as inspiration for those familiar Disney images. (Part II, airing later in the year, will be hosted by Glenn Close).
Cambodians in America: Rebuilding the Temple
(PBS, 10-11 p.m.): In the late 1970s and early 80s, nearly 150,000 Cambodians fled their war-torn homeland for the United States, grateful for a chance to rebuild their lives. More than a decade later, the Massachusetts-based documentary team of Claudia Levin and Lawrence Hott explore the painful decisions Cambodian-Americans are making in communities across the US to preserve Buddhist traditions and family ties. The film is both broad and personal, relying on heart-felt interviews with a range of Cambod ian immigrants. It is surprisingly strong in explaining the role of Buddhist theology in daily Cambodian life.
