LAST SALVADORAN ELITE BATTALION DISSOLVED
| SAN SALVADOR
* El Salvador's Army demobilized the last United States-trained counterinsurgency battalion on Feb. 6, completing force cuts promised in a 1992 civil war peace accord.
The battalions had been accused of repeated human rights violations during the decade-long war.
El Salvador's peace process has been troubled by allegations that the rebels have refused to turn over all weapons and that the government has refused to dismiss all identified rights violators in the armed forces.
