CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS EARN MORE IN `92

Median total annual compensation (salary plus bonus) for chief executive officers was $1,050,000 in 1992, up about 8 percent over the previous year, according to a study of 136 Fortune 1000 companies by Towers Perrin, a management consulting company.

The median bonus was just over $443,000, up 12 percent from 1991. The biggest growth came in short-term bonuses rather than base salaries, says Paula Todd, manager of compensation research and development for Towers Perrin.

"The change in salary for CEOs is very consistent with the salary increases granted to lower-level employees - executives and nonexecutives alike - in 1992," Ms. Todd says.
