The Tide In

Here on the summer porch they are discussing stocks. The tide is in, and the early sheen of sunlight on the water across the flats glorifies the salt grass and bayberry with a superabundance of light. A trawler is approaching harbor followed by a tumbling cone of sea gulls. Their wings blink and flash as they pattern and repattern the air. Shade moves down the wall of the wide porch as the talkers now evaluate the strategies of mutual funds in the current market. Three cormorants pass over, necks out, wings rapid, hurling themselves out over the brilliant sea.
