IN the southern region of the United States, 56 percent of homeowners spent money on the upkeep of their homes. In the West and Midwest, that number rose to 64 percent and 66 percent in the Northeast, according to a new Census Bureau report released Wednesday.

The disparity is attributed to lower income households and more mobile homes in the South.
