* WHEN A MAN LOVES A WOMAN - (R, Touchstone Home Video). Andy Garcia and Meg Ryan deliver convincing performances as a man and his alcoholic wife, but unfortunately the plot can't match their abilities. The film spends too much time pinning blame as Alice confronts her alcohol addiction. The film also mercilessly plays upon viewers' emotions, especially in scenes involving the couple's two young daughters. In the end, however, the film's message that couples should try to work out their problems is refreshing in a time when divorce is prevalent. (April 29, 1994)
