WORLD BEAT. Madredeus - O Espirito da Paz (EMI): This back-to-roots band has captured the hearts of Portuguese teens and octogenarians alike, topping the charts in their home country and doing well elsewhere. When's the last time you've heard of 80,000 fans going wild for a classical guitar-cello-accordion combo dressed in black suits and ties? Teresa Salguerio's stratospheric soprano rings deep into the soul of many Portuguese with myths of romance and heroism from the nation's seafaring folklore. The album title, meaning ``the spirit of peace,'' says it all. Listen for the band's soundtrack in the next Wim Wenders film.
