Venice Raises Its Glass To Dale Chihuly
He's done it again. The world-renowned artist from Seattle continues to shatter limitations of his medium. This time, he and his crew of 20 are visiting premier glass factories in five countries - Finland, Ireland, Czech Republic, France, and Italy. At each stop, they are creating thousands of glass parts for 'chandeliers' that will hang over five canals of Venice next year. Called 'Chihuly Over Venice,' the monumental project is now in its second phase at Ireland's Waterford Crystal Co. The works' spec tacular artistry and enormous size (20 feet high, up to 4,000 pounds) will lend drama to the famed Gondola tour. Two films are being produced about the collaboration: one for public TV and the other a documentary for theatrical release.
