WORTH NOTING ON TV

National Geographic (NBC, 8-9 p.m.): For viewers in colder climates, this National Geographic special, filmed during a drought in South Africa, may foster new appreciation for winter temperatures. The action centers around animals trying to survive near a dwindling pool - all that is left of the Luvuvhu (or Hippo) River - in South Africa's Kruger National Park. Shedding light on the dynamics of an ecosystem under duress, the program reveals a surprising circumstance: The crocodiles and hippopotamuses, who share extremely cramped quarters, coexist peacefully. Most other animals, however, are fair game for the crocs, and several scenes of the ferocious carnivores snapping at their prey may be too intense for some viewers.

Championship Ballroom Dancing (PBS, 9-10:30 p.m.): Proper attire requested: swooshing gowns and dapper tuxedos. These flashy costumes, along with brilliant routines, have been showcased on championship ballroom-dancing specials on PBS for 15 years. This anniversary edition features the International Standard and International Latin competitions, held in November in Columbus, Ohio. Other treats include a retrospective of the program's best moments; a look at ballroom dancing then, now, and tomorrow; and a fashion show of ballroom dress over the years.

The Naked Truth (ABC, 9:30-10 p.m.): This episode of the comedy, set at a tabloid newspaper, takes up the theme of balancing work and friendship. Nora (Tea Leoni) becomes boss to some of her buddies, which teaches her some hard lessons. Guest starring is George Hamilton as himself.

* FRIDAY

Citizens '96 (PBS, 9-11 p.m. EST): The second installment of this series on citizen involvement and dialogue travels to Des Moines, Iowa, for the upcoming presidential caucus. After a political round-table and interviews with newsmakers, the program presents a live town meeting with the presidential candidates and Iowa voters.
