Town charter would be a Bible

Brooksville, a community of about 400 people in northern Alabama, wants to eliminate the space between church and state.

The village leaders want to incorporate Brooksville into a town that would have the King James Bible as its charter and the Ten Commandments as its only ordinances. No town hall, no mayor, and no town council.

Leading the way is the Rev. James Henderson, who wants to unite this community of mostly white, Baptist, blue- and white-collar workers behind Christian principles.

The Alabama League of Municipalities, as well as some residents who favor a Bible-based charter, see practical barriers to the idea. For one thing, it may not be legal, as state law requires that incorporated towns have mayors. The village may vote on incorporation as early as February.
