What's there to look at?
The scope of the works at the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, Calif., is matched only by its quality, says Los Angeles County Museum of Art director Andrea Rich, who joins the ranks of those who dub the museum "a jewel."
Ranging from the 14th to the 20th century, the paintings and sculptures include Renaissance, Baroque, and Rococo masterworks by Raphael, El Greco, Rubens, Rembrandt, and Hals, as well as what Getty curator of paintings Scott Schaefer has called the "extraordinary Impressionist works," highlighted by a collection of Degas sculptures.
Other outstanding works include pieces by Goya, Manet, Monet, Renoir, Picasso, van Gogh, and Czanne. The print collection encompasses what are considered some of the finest and rarest etchings of Rembrandt, Goya, and Picasso.
Among the sculptures from South Asia in the collection are major works from India, Nepal, Thailand, and Cambodia.
