Youth invest time and money in charity

Lured by visions of early retirement funded by stock options, many youths are pushing and clawing their way to a seat on the cybertrain. At the same time, a handful of youths - budding philanthropists - are dangling gold instead of chasing it.

Across the US, charities are increasingly looking to young people to raise money and to help decide what organizations to support. In Michigan, for example, high school students with the Grand Rapids Foundation Youth Grant Committee reviewed more than three-dozen applications from nonprofits, including a summer program for disadvantaged students. The committee has nearly $80,000 to donate. There are about 300 similar groups nationwide.
