Testing times

Anxious parents waited in Beijing recently for children to emerge from the first day of a three-day college-entrance exam. More than 3 million students took the test, which governs entrance to China's 1,021 universities. A phone hotline was set up and parents rented air-conditioned hotel rooms to help the young scholars deal with the stress of the high-stakes venture.
